For our exhibition, I think it would be a good idea to have a comic con vibe. Or just an open space where all of our VR's can be displayed along with the description and ads to go with it. Last year we did this cool step by step representation. I liked how the steps were clear and very visual, and it made it easier for the audience to understand it. VR can be a tough thing to explain, especially because it was a difficult process for most of us. I think VR is a new technological advancement so most of our parents and guests will be impressed by how advanced this project was by us. This could inspire others to create their own creations based on what message they want to get out to the world.I think by telling others the advantages and positive impact VR has on parts of the world can be eye opening. But at the same time letting people know the disadvantages and what reality really is.
In humanities class we got a deeper idea of what Dewey's views were on education. We really got to understand where project based learning began and how it is a better alternative than traditional school learning. We can see engaged learning first hand if we look around our school. Even in the VR project, we are put in a similar situation. We work for others and we earn "money". Instead of strictly learning about VR's and jobs, we get to experience it. We don't just hear that education and learning is important, we learn why it's important. I think tests and grades are all part of this system, where we do things to get good grades. If we have to fake it till we make it, we do. We become so attached to this idea of grades that we forget the true concept of education. Although grades can be distracting, they are necessary to show how we've learned and they push us to try harder to achieve a better grade. Even in the real world, money is something we all get too focused on rather than passion and advancement. Yet we need money to trade.

In Engineering, a celebration would be that I got hired for a quick acting job. I enjoyed doing it because it was a fun scene. I was in the scene with Abril and we were talking casually like friends.
I think a cognitive dissonance during this project would have to be the jobs available. At the beginning of this project I thought there would be way more jobs and money available. I thought that if anyone was lacking in money, there would be small last minute jobs to be done. I have dealt with this issue by working as admin everyday for about an hour or so, I also have been on the lookout for other jobs that could be done my me. In Humanities we read a few articles about hashtag activism and learned how it is effective to start a movement on social media but it cannot be the only thing done. Social media is popular and when you hashtag activism it is more likely for people to see it and be aware of the topic. But this is only the starting point, you have to start protests or get together. Hashtags grow communities so you can do something bigger. I think the hashtag activism is a cop out was the one that spoke to me the most because it grew my opinion for hashtags. I am on track to getting $1500 (an A). I have earned $593 so far, so my plan is to make this same amount every two weeks.
In Humanities we learned how important news is and where to find the most reliable sources. I think now I will look for news that unbiased and if they are I can always interpret them my own way. I do think it is important to be updated with news almost daily so we can be aware of our surroundings and events. I think it is important for everyone to have the common sense to believe news more carefully. We cannot believe whatever we see, we must look at multiple sources and create our own conclusions. I was at ThinkaBit Wednesday and Friday, and I learned a lot about working with kids and circuit boards. It was fun to watch young kids put their creations together and continue to love engineering. In engineering class we have been working with our producers to get our part of the project done. What works well for me is the fact that we all are accountable for ourselves. If we slack off or miss school we have to make up the money somehow. The amount of money we make reflects on our integrity and effort; so we need to make sure we make ends meet. One issue with this project would be the time we have with each other. Some people from the other class work for the producers in my class so there is not much time we can work together due to different schedules. Maybe we could dedicate one day for our classes to merge together so we can work as a team.
When I am put in a distracting situation; as a leader I feel obligated to lead my classmates back on track. And remove myself from situations like these. In humanities we have been learning the impact that people in power have on us little people. I have heard the phrase used many times, "Money talks". When we notice people of status and class we tend to listen to them because they become more credible somehow. Just like how news sources and news reporters deliver information to us; we should be able to believe them. However this is not always the case; media lies. They follow news stories and sometimes report bias or opinions and interpret it back to us. In engineering class we read an article called Singularity. It was about how in the future, how advanced life is going to be. The most disturbing prediction was how there is going to be less jobs and some new ones. It said 60-70% of jobs are going to disappear. I can't believe so many jobs will go away because there will be new technology. I was happy at the fact, less cars will be used because there will be uber and other car companies; there will be less pollution.
Thursday, we had a lot of job interviews going on every 5 minutes. I think that the job fair/interview process was authentic because we learned there is competition and how everything is fast paced. And to know not everyone is going to hired us, we got turned down most of the time. Even some people got hired for being friends or having personal connections; this happens in the real world. I think it could have been improved by having an application process or longer interviews. I learned that I am good at interviews and negotiating. I have also learned that you have to wiggle your way through and sometimes sabotage other competitors; in the real world you have to play the game. In humanities we learned about how advertising manipulates the consumer to buy it's products. Advertising uses weasel words to say something that we interpret in a different way. Products that say words like, "Help". These words sound like the product does something without them actually doing anything. It's the way the consumer interprets the message. I think there should be stricter regulations on ads directed towards children. They are too young to uncover the lies of ads. There should be regulations against weasel words and some children ads. This past week we focused on gathering our guild. What is a guild? All specialists must belong to a guild representing their skill before they can be hired. Guilds protect the reputation of their professions and defend the rights of their members. We had a choice in which guild we wanted to create, such as: -3D modelers -VR Videography -VR Video Editors -Programmers -Screen Writers -Actors -Set Designers The guild I joined was the actors guild. Just like in a real workplace, we must have a plan B and even sometimes a plan C. So other guilds I have expressed interest in is the Videography and Screen Writers guild; because we all are primarily involved with film. We are getting "paid" for our job based on our performance, So we calculated an average in which actors get paid. We also created requirements that need to be met by those who want to join. We haven't faced any real challenges this week. However, a celebration of ours was gathering our group and talking about experience and skills. It was helpful to get to know everyone. In English this week, we read quite a bit about propaganda and double-speak. This impacted my thinking about virtual reality. When we are in a VR world we are not in a real world with real problems and celebrations. It's a replica of the real thing; but not perfect. By learning how political leaders use propaganda and double-speak to manipulate us to agree with them seems very similar to VR. Propaganda and VR can both be a version of what's real or the truth. These articles opened my eyes to how much we leave unnoticed. A question that I had after reading is; How many votes or support have these people earned using propaganda? |
Cecilia Carranza-DavisAs we progress through this project, I will be posting blogs to update you about issues, ideas, challenges, celebrations, skills learned, etc for both engineering and English every Friday. Archives
