High Tech Hole In One
Building Process: First we had to build the actual golf course. But before we did that me and my group chose how we wanted the golf course to look. We wanted it to be simple but challenging, we also wanted there to be multiple ways to get the ball in the hole. We took measurements and found out how much it would cost for the board and the trim. Roberto cut our board for us, so it was up to us to cut the trim, everything had to fit perfectly. That was one of the challenging parts, we had to keep cutting because every time we cut we were always off a little. It was definitely worth it, our course ended up coming together perfectly.
Obstacles: Our obstacles had to represent an event in history that our historical figure had to face. Our historical person was Napoleon, and some obstacles he had to face was The Continental System, The Invasion of Egypt, The Reign of Terror, The Invasion of Russia and the Battle of Waterloo. My obstacle was The Continental System and it represents how Britain captured European ships and stopped Europe from trading with anyone, which hurt their economy more than Napoleon had thought of. To the left is a picture of our completed golf course.
The Continental System
Napoleon is a significant person in history because he conquered most of Europe in such a short time of reigning. Napoleon conquered Egypt, Belgium, Holland, much of Italy, Austria, Germany, Poland and Spain. Because much of Europe was separated it was easier to take over each country at a time than if they were in conjunction (Continental System). Britain and Russia were the only two countries for Napoleon to defeat, Napoleon wanted to especially invade Britain because they were the only country actively fighting France. The result was the Continental System, Napoleon blocked all trade from Britain hoping it would weaken his enemy but, had some obstacles that made it impossible and eventually led to his defeat. The Continental System lasted from 1806 to 1811.
The Invasion of Egypt
In an attempt to stop Britain's trade with India, Napoleon quickly mobilized his forces to Egypt. However, Napoleon’s invasion of historical pursuits were never fully realized as a result of Horatio Nelson and the British forces. The admiral is credited with Napoleon's defeat in Cairo, Egypt. Due to the surprising interference of the British forces, any chance of France conquering Egypt was quickly dashed away. Napoleon, not being the type of individual to smudge his newly-appointed military title promptly removed the press’ prying eyes from this military blunder. Therefore, “free speech and freedom of the press were abridged. The golf ball represents Napoleon traveling through Egypt and stealing the Rosetta Stone. Napoleon’s Invasion of Egypt lasted until 1798 to 1801.
Reign of Terror
The entire reason behind this period is that Maximilian was a very twisted man, he had a very sick idea of government. He believed that in order to stop a revolution. Society and religion had to be abolished. This demented man got the idea in his head to kill “enemies of the state” most of these people were from the Third Estate.the very people he was trying to protect. Now that was not the only reason no there were other reasons. Lots of people were killed for saying things the wrong way. Naturally Robespierre with his twisted mentality he simply believed that “the ends justify the means”; and with the Committee Of Public Safety he had the country in the palm of his hand and if he didn’t like a person they would have their head chopped off. While in power he began having internal purges of the government. During the purges he would kill anyone who was on the opposite political party, so many innocent men and women were killed. But he decided to purge the government again for people not being radical enough, but before he was able to do it he was killed thus ending this Reign of Terror.
Invasion of Russia
The French Army began the trek home, but faced many obstacles. The army was greatly weakened compared to when they had started out. Many soldiers had left in search of food or died of starvation. A large amount of soldiers were wounded or killed in battle and the rest were having to deal with the unbearable cold. Because the French Army was so weak, they were an easy target for the Russians. There were many soldiers left behind on this journey. Napoleon decided to leave his army and left Joachim Murat in charge. Napoleon hurried to Paris due to rumors he heard of people trying to overthrow the government. Napoleon’s army only had around 10,000 able soldiers left when they returned back to France (Mcdougal). The trip back to France had a substantial impact on Napoleon’s army.
Battle of Waterloo
On the day of June 18, 1815 was the Battle of Waterloo. It was the final defeat for the military leader/ emperor Napoleon. In this battle Napoleon was defeated by his allies he had been fighting with for many years when he was in power. Those countries were Britain, and Prussia. Even though Napoleon had a large amount of men to fight with him. He did not have a good battling strategies. Britain had the best strategies out of both troops. Because of Napoleon’s mistakes throughout the battle, lead to his downfall.
Humanities
Above is the history to our obstacle. The math group constructed stands where the Humanities part of this project was presented. We wrote essays on our topics.
Math
In Math we made measurements of the boards. But most importantly we calculated ways to get a hole in one or two. Using the law of reflection, isosceles triangles, constant rate of change and similar triangles to make possible ways to get the ball in the hole for the players to attempt. We made blue prints of our golf course, which was pretty cool.
Multimedia
For multimedia we first made a logo for our golf courses. The name we decided on was High Tech Hole In One. We all had to make possible logos using Adobe Illustrator. After, we had an art gallery walk and picked which logo we liked most. We decided on this one. I was in the video group so we were making costumes for our historical figures, and filmed them getting interviewed at the golf course. Using a green screen we put the mini golf course in the background so it gave it the effect that the people were actually on it. We did all this using Final Cut Pro.
Exhibition
Exhibition went really well. Some kids that came thought that the object of the game was to knock my ships down, so my obstacle was all beat up at the end but that was okay since I wasn't going to use the course again. The parents had fun playing and learning, and I even enjoyed myself. I ended up knowing more about my course then I had thought I would.
