Blackout Poetry
This was also another mini project we did at the beginning of the year. The poem we based this assignment on was "Let America Be America Again", By Langston Hughes. The poem is about two people who have different opinions and who are in a way arguing with each other about America. One is saying how America should be the America it once was, and the other is arguing how it was never America to him. I think one literary device found in this poem is race.
Once we analyzed this poem, we wanted to do an assignment done before, called "Blackout Poetry". Where we basically make our own poem out of random words within that same poem, and at the same time making some type of design or art. |
In Cold Blood Essay

So like I mentioned on my In cold Blood page, I chose to do psychoanalytic lens. (To read more, go to my In Cold Blood page). I also incorporated readers response just because I thought it would be cool if I added some of my in put and ideas while reading the book.
The process to write this essay was quite complex for me. When I finished this essay, I was so proud of myself. So the first step was to find out what critical lens you wanted to focus on. Then we got into groups with people who also wanted to write about that topic, so we could get ideas from each other. Then we got time in class to begin gathering quotes and evidence needed to write our essay. Colleen set a date for when our essay was due, so we had to manage our time wisely in order to get it done. For me, gathering the quotes was the toughest task. Because I would remember a specific quote but not remember the page number it was on. Also, I got stuck in my writing from time to time. But when I was finished and had the four pages in length requirement, I was more than proud of myself. Below you will find my final essay draft. |
Imaginative NonFiction
In this writing piece, each student interviewed another and took one “nugget” from the interview. With that, they wrote their piece based off of that broad story. Each student choose how they would incorporate their nugget through song, poems, a short story etc.
I wrote a fictional story based on my partner, Sarah's story. The nugget I identified was her saying she had different perspectives. I picked this nugget because perspective was something that was interesting we were learning about. You will see my final draft of my story to the right. One challenge I had, while writing this was trying to keep it a short story. Once I started writing, I wanted to add more detail and wanted to add so many plot twists; I got carried away and forgot it was supposed to be a short story. The revision process was very thorough. We got it revised and I even did a lot of revision to try to clip it down to the desired length. |

I connected my writing to my kinetic art by drawing an image of a rose that is slightly imperfect and the other image was a rose that was wilted but had sunlight and rain. The message it had was even though the rose was wilted it still had a chance to be beautiful. And the "perfect" rose had imperfections that were unexpected. Just like in my story, the main character, had a bad life but she still had love in her heart for her sister. And her family who seemed perfect, while underneath her family was totally divided.
Deanna wrote a poem about me, it was truly beautiful. It was based on love and she got a nugget from me about my first crush. Our mural piece had to be about our partners piece about us. So my mural piece was a heart caught up in a tornado.
