House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, is a book about the main character, Esperanza who learns life changing things from individuals on her street. Such as Sally, Alicia, and Marin. Their mistakes lead Esperanza to being independent.
Sammy and Julianna
Sammy and Julianna by Benjamin Alire Saenz is about main character Sammy, who learns about hope and family. Sammy loses a lot of people in his life that he loves and only makes him stronger. Juliana his girlfriend dies first at the begining of the book when he is weak. Then when more and more of his family/friends start to die mistakes they have made, such as joining a gang or joining the military. At the end he is strong.
Antigone
Antigone by Sophocles, is a Greek tragedy play about a girl named Antigone. Antigone has two brothers and one sister. She fought with Creon, her uncle, for the burying of her brother.
My Sisters Keeper
In My Sisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult, the main character Anna, is in a tight situation between her parents and her sister. Anna was born specially to be a donor for her sister Kate. Kate is her sister who has leukemia. Anna gives her blood cells and bone marrow and anything else Kate ever needed because their a match. Anna's whole life, she had to be in the hospital with Kate, donating. Anna apparently got tired of donating and found a lawyer to sue her parents to the right of her own body, she wanted to stop donating, in mind that if she stops donating to her sister, Kate will die.
Of Mice And men
In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the main characters are Lennie Small and George Milton . Lennie struggles with mental illness and George watches him and is kind of Lennie's caretaker. When Lennie makes a mistake at the old ranch they were working at, George is forced to find another job and take Lennie with him. They run into a few problems while working at the new ranch, one of them is with a guy named Curley, his wife always wants company with the other guys they assume she is flirting. Steinbeck shows us different kinds of discrimination such as gender inequality, racism, discrimination towards mental disabilities.
The art of racing in the rain
The book Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein is written from a dogs perspective. The dogs name is Enzo who talks about his life and also gives advice how to live life or how he would live life as a human. Him telling the story gave us a little of perspective of how life is to a dog. We read this book to help us out with the Perspective Project, and have an example of writing from animals perspective.
Romeo and Juliet
The book Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare is about two households who hate each other, Montague and Capulet's. Romeo a Montague, and Juliet a Capulet fall in love, even though their families have a huge feud. Romeo and Juliet get married secretly. And because the huge feud the went through so many problems trying to stay together, they eventually killed themselves. The feud then stopped when they saw their daughter and son die.
Dear Zoe
In the book Dear Zoe by Philip Beard, is about 15 year old named Tess DeNunzio who struggles with the guilt of killing her little sister Zoe on 9/11. The book is based on Tess telling her dead little sister how life is after she died and how she blames herself. Tess feels her mom and stepfather exclude her out of their grief so she moved in with her dad and meets Jimmy a guy who she can get away from her life with. She learns that she needs to move on and that Zoe dying was not her fault.
